In Your Dreams

Struggling artist and mother Kate Tindle devours a seemingly innocent dessert, a slice of 'Dream Cake', at a school bazaar which brings her a sudden freedom from her everyday life. At night, she crawls exhausted into her bed in Oxford, England, only to wake up, rejuvenated and unburdened of her pregnancy, in a dreamscape of the American Southwest. Here she is attracted to a half-Navajo man who believes he's dreaming her.

When Kate's brother Adam has a car accident that places him in a coma, she discovers that Jonathan Nez, the man of her dreams, was a passenger in her brother's car, and is lying in a coma too. Her night-times then become a quest in which she and Jon must somehow find Adam and rescue both men before their dreaming states become permanent.

Kate is due to give birth to her third child at any moment. Adam's coma is throwing family life into turmoil. There are only eight slices of cake, and she must eat a piece each day to return to the dreamworld at night. What her mysterious cake benefactor wants in return, she has no idea, but she expects that, with this gift, there'll eventually come a price.

First draft of chapter 1

I wrote these pages on 1-2 November 2005 as part of the NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words in a month. To write that number of words so quickly meant no rewriting, no polishing, no changing my mind. Just GO! So this draft is pretty rough and ready, but it's a good start.

Excerpt

From 1-3 November 2006, and the last NaNoWriMo. Kate and Jon are in the dreamworld together. They've just flown into Denver, and are following a trail of clues left by Adam, including a radio station, Adam-FM, which is acting like a homing beacon.

You can read a different excerpt on the NaNoWriMo website on my author pages.
