Jayne Rice

I write about contemporary life and issues - with a magical twist.

NaNoWriMo participant logoIn my novel In Your Dreams, written during National Novel Writing Month 2005 and 2006, Kate Tindle, suffocated by motherhood, finds release through realistic dreams she shares with coma victim Jonathan Nez, who is also on the run from himself.

In Soulmate, Maddy Blake gets a second chance at lost love when her frustrated soul ends up in her arch-rival's body, and Conor Keane wonders if he too can turn back the clock when his dead wife begins to haunt him through cryptic postcards.

I like uneasy characters, people stranded in the unmapped parts of their souls. People like Denise in Dehydration or Vernon Hewitt in The Two-Thirty Guided Tour, whose realities are battlegrounds. And though they win often, the victories never satisfy.

The characters who find a path through their own minds are those who can lose. In Red Hotel on the Strand, Monique is happy to trade money and power for platonic love. And in my novel A God Facing Both Ways, Quentin Marsh-Rowland must turn his back on a distinguished family history before he can forge his own future.
