Firstly, Margaret Atwood. She was the unaverage Canadian schoolkid, the misfit dreamer who scribbled and scribbled and scribbled. Will I be like her? Maybe not, but I'll damn well try.

Secondly, Carol Shields, Robertson Davies, Ann Tyler, Haruki Murakami, Margaret Lawrence, Doris Lessing, John Updike, Beryl Bainbridge, E. Annie Proulx, Gail Andersen-Dargatz, Ian MacEwan, Toni Morrison, Guy Vanderhaeghe, Kazuo Ishiguro and Douglas Coupland.

Thirdly, the unexplained. If we knew everything there was to be known, what on earth would be the point of writing?
